Alli

Girl name · 4 babies recorded · 1974–2025

Alli: 4 babies born in Scotland since 1974, given to girls, peaking at 4 births in 2012.

Alli is most commonly a Scottish diminutive form of Alison or Alice, ultimately derived from the Germanic name Adalheidis, meaning 'noble type' or 'of noble kin'. As a standalone given name, it also appears in Finnish as a diminutive of Aleksanteri (Alexander) and in the Arabic world, where it can mean 'exalted' or 'sublime', a variant of Ali. Perhaps the most famous bearer is Alli, the English professional footballer Dele Alli, born in Milton Keynes but of Nigerian and English heritage. The name has no major place connections, though it shares its root with the Scottish place name Alloa. Notably, in Scotland, Alli enjoyed a small spike in registrations in the early 2000s, possibly influenced by the singer Alli Simpson, though it remains far less common than its longer forms.
