Aonghas is the Gaelic form of Angus, deriving from the Old Irish *Oengus*, a compound of *oen* meaning “one” or “unique” and *gus* meaning “choice” or “strength” – giving the sense of “one strength” or “unique choice.” The name was borne by the 9th-century Pictish king Aonghas mac Fergusa, who expanded the kingdom of Fortriu, and by the 14th-century poet Aonghas MacMhuirich, a key figure in Gaelic bardic tradition.
