Cosmo is a name of Greek origin, derived from *Kosmos*, meaning "order, beauty, or universe." It entered English usage through the veneration of two early Christian saints, including Saint Cosmas, a 3rd-century physician martyred with his twin brother Damian. The name gained a distinctly Scottish association through Cosmo Gordon Lang, the first Scottish Archbishop of Canterbury in the 20th century, and more recently through the fictional Cosmo Brown in the film *Singin' in the Rain*. The root *kosmos* also gives us the word "cosmetics" and the modern term "cosmos" for the universe. A notable variant is the Italian form Cosimo, famously borne by several Medici rulers of Florence.
