Cyprian derives from the Latin Cyprianus, itself from the Greek Kyprios, meaning 'from Cyprus' – the island known in antiquity for its copper mines and as the birthplace of Aphrodite. The name was borne by several early Christian saints, most notably Saint Cyprian, the third-century Bishop of Carthage whose writings shaped Latin theology, and by Cyprian Kamil Norwid, the celebrated nineteenth-century Polish poet and artist.
