Girl name · 3,585 babies recorded · 1974–2025
Kimberley: 3,585 babies born in Scotland since 1974, given to girls, peaking at 260 births in 1988.
Kimberley springs from an Old English place name, combining *Cyneburg* (meaning "royal fortress") with *lēah* (a clearing or meadow). It rose from a South African diamond mining town to become a popular girls' name across the English-speaking world in the 1970s and '80s. Among its famous bearers are actress Kimberley Williams-Paisley and British singer Kimberley Walsh of Girls Aloud. The Scottish place name Kincardine shares the same "royal" root, and of course the Kimberley region in Western Australia was named after the original English village. A once-common variant spelling, Kimberly, has gradually given way to the -ley ending in modern usage, though both continue to be used.
