Laughlin is the Anglicised form of the Gaelic *Lachlann*, meaning “from the land of the lochs,” a name originally given to Norse-speaking settlers from Scandinavia (the “loch-lands” being the fjords). Its most famous bearer is the 16th-century Irish chieftain Laughlin O’Cahan, a fierce defender of Ulster. The name also shares roots with the Scottish clan name MacLachlan, whose chiefs were recorded as early as the 1200s. A less common variant, Lochlann, was given to a handful of modern Scots bairns and carries the same water-born imagery. In literature, the name appears in Sir Walter Scott’s *Waverley*, lending it a romantic, Highland flavour that still feels fresh today.
