Odhran (pronounced OH-rawn or OH-drawn) is an ancient Irish name derived from the Gaelic *odhar*, meaning “pale green” or “sallow,” originally referring to a person’s complexion. Its most famous bearer is Saint Odhran, a 6th-century Irish monk and disciple of Saint Columba, who is said to have been the first Christian buried on the Scottish island of Iona. The name also links to the Monastery of Odhran, founded in what is now County Tipperary. A Scottish saint bearing the same name—often anglicised as Oran—is associated with the island of Colonsay, giving the village of Oronsay its name. This classic name has become increasingly popular in modern Scotland, partly through its prominent use in Taylor Swift’s 2024 song “The Albatross,” where an Oran is a key figure.
