Shauna

Girl name · 281 babies recorded · 1974–2025

Shauna: 281 babies born in Scotland since 1974, given to girls, peaking at 23 births in 2000.

Shauna is the anglicised feminine form of Seán, the Irish version of John, ultimately from the Hebrew Yochanan, meaning "God is gracious." This name became particularly popular in Scotland and Ireland during the mid-20th century. Among its famous bearers is American actress Shauna Macdonald, known for her role in *The Descent*, and Shauna Coxsey, a celebrated British competition climber. The American rapper Shauna Brooks performs as Shaunna. Although not directly tied to the name Shauna, the Irish place name Shannon shares a similar phonetic root and is also derived from the same Hebrew origin via the feminine form Siobhán. Interestingly, Shauna saw a notable rise in Scotland from the 1970s through the 1990s but has since become much rarer for newborns.
